Cleaning Your Diamonds

Diamonds get dirty. Hand and body lotions, soaps, even natural skin oils, put a film on diamonds and diminish their brilliance. Clean diamonds are so “sparkly” because the maximum amount of light is allowed to enter and return without interference. Just soak your diamond jewelry for 3-5 minutes in the jar of cleaner you received on your trip to Ramsey’s.  If you run out, just stop by and ask for more.  It’s complementary.

If it has been 4 months since your last cleaning and inspection, or you just want your diamonds “extra sparkly”, then have one of our diamond consultants give it a professional cleaning.  Usually we can do it while you wait.

Storing Your Diamonds

When you're not wearing your diamonds and precious jewelry, keep them separated in your jewelry box or other safe place.  Keep them in a fabric-lined jewelry case, a box with compartments or dividers, or wrap each piece with tissue to keep them from rubbing against each other.  If you pile diamond pieces in a drawer or jewelry case, they can scratch other jewelry and/or each other.

Taking Your Diamonds on Vacation

Please pack them carefully.  There are many types of jewelry cases especially designed for travel, available in many styles and price ranges. Most have velvet pads inside to attach pins and earrings, and special compartments for bracelets and necklaces.

Caring for Your Diamond Jewelry

Even though you may wear your diamond engagement ring continuously, you should still give thought to its care.

Don't wear it when you're doing gardening, moving large objects, or other rough work. Even though a diamond is durable, it can be chipped by a hard blow.  Be conscious of it on your hands around metal filing cabinets, and any metal tools.

Don't let your diamond come in contact with chlorine bleach when you're doing household chores. It can pit and discolor the mounting.  For the same reason, try not to wear your jewelry swimming or hot tubbing.  The chlorine used in the water can damage your mountings as well.

Also, try to avoid getting hairspray and perfume on your diamond jewelry.  Although it usually will not cause any damage to the diamonds themselves, it certainly makes them dirty and cuts down on the sparkle.  Visit Ramsey’s every 4 months and have us clean and inspect your ring and other precious pieces for loose prongs and wear of mountings.
