Gold sells for less than $2,000 an ounce. So if you were given a one-ounce cube of gold and told to carve it into any shape you wanted, how much would you really want to carve away?
Now what about diamonds? An ounce of one-carat diamonds is worth $765,000! So if you were a diamond cutter, how much diamond would you want to cut away at $765,000 an ounce?
You'd probably cut the diamond for maximum size, and not maximum sparkle.
This is why most diamonds look bloated and don't sparkle like they should. Diamonds sell by weight – carat weight – so heavier diamonds sell for more money.
But these poorly cut diamonds look terrible! They send light out the sides, making the diamond look dark or "dead" in the center.
